Education in South Africa

TIMSS 2019 data collection has started! Between 22 October and 9 November, Grade 5 classes in selected schools across the country are being visited to gather data on mathematics and science achievement, as well as contextual data related to their homes and schools.

The South African component of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science study (TIMSS) has been assessing mathematics and science achievement among Grade 8 and 9 learners since 1995. In South Africa, TIMSS was conducted in 1995, 1999, 2002 and 2011, and the most recent round of TIMSS was administered in 2015.
The new TIMSS Numeracy assessment has been designed to be administered at the Grade 4, 5 or 6 level to measure children’s numeracy learning outcomes. TIMSS Numeracy was conducted for the first time in South Africa in 2014 at the Grade 5 level.
